Apple’s Lightning VS USB Type-C . Face Off ?
The biggest buzz these days is Apple removing the 3.5 mm standard audio jack from there latest flagship iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus . Which leaves only a single lightning port which will handle all the connections . But we are here to discus the pros and cons of Lightning and USB Type-C . Let’s begin .
Support Higher Charging Capabilities.
Type-C is capable of supporting power up to 100 watts, i.e. a current up to 20 volts and 5 amps . This much power is far more than what a smartphone would need to completely charge its battery . But , if not handles correctly this much power can destroy your device . Days , where smartphone companies will be able to utilize this power are still far away .
Higher Data transfer Speed
USB 3.1 Type-C has a 24 pins connection. Apple Lightning has only 8 pins. Type-C can transmit data with a speed of 10 Gbps . Which makes it faster than its competitor .
Everyone can have it .
Though it is new , more and more smartphone companies are adding these ports to their flagship phones . By writing everyone can have it , i mean all the companies can add this port to there device there is no restrictions over it . Which is not the case with Lightning , only Apple devices can have Lightning port .
Lightning port was designed and developed by Intel which was later brought by Apple . It’s Apple’s choice of connector for a long time now . With iPhone 7 only having a lightning port it’s obvious Apple will continue using the same connector .
Comparing the size of the connector Lightning is smaller and thus easier to connect . Both the connectors are dual sided means they can be connected in either direction .
No other manufacturer can use Lightning without Apple’s permission , they have to pay to use it . So , almost all the manufactures prefer USB Type-C not just because free , of course it better if you don’t have to pay for it but because it better in most aspects and have minor disadvantages .
No Fast Charging
Though Lightning supports fast charging Apple still doesn’t ship there devices with fast charging cables and adapters .
For some reference MacWorld tested the speed of USB type-C against Thunderbolt . And results are not surprising .
