Paper Mario: Color Splash is an action-adventure game. It is based on Mario using the Paint Hammer to paint colorless elements, characters and parts of the environment in order to move forward in the game and gain Mini Paint Stars and Big Paint Stars. When a stage is completed, multiple new stages becomes available at once .

Story begin at Port Prisma where all the toads are playing with paints of various colors. Bowser, watcing from above, jumps into the rainbow-painted area in the middle of the Big Paint Stars to give his shell a rainbow hue. However, accidentally he created black color by making the splash, which brainwash Bowser and make him Black , then he start stealing the Big Paint Stars and making everything colorless with his minions .
When Mario finds out about this by Princess he goes to Prism Island in a stormy night.Mario finds a hammer at island and uses it to get to Town Square , which has become completely colorless . Mario then meet Huey, a mysterious 3D talking paint bucket. Huey finds that the Big Paint Stars at Prisma Fountain are stolen and asks Mario to find them and bring them to the fountain.
At Bloo Bay Beach, Mario and Huey participate in the Ocean Fest Paint Star to know more about Paint Star.
Mario reaches Crimson Tower, to a Red Paint airship. Mario and Huey board the airship and destroy it, paint fall over the tower and both of’em get inside. Inside, they find Morton Koopa Jr., who is aslo looking for the red Big Paint Star. Mario defeats Morton and recovers the red Big Paint Star, which is then used repaint the large gate entrance in Sunglow Ridge .
Mario and Huey return to Port Prisma. Bowser shows up and reveal to Mario his plan to use the power of black paint to take on the world. Then flies on to the airship with a lot of Bowser tape on it, take Peach with him. Peach manages to leave an Holo-Peach to Mario, telling him that Bowser seems different besides the black paint that covers him, even though he doesn’t intend to be harm her.
Later, Bowser uses the black paint to add color to his Banzai Bills. Peach is shown hanging colorless above his throne.
After that , Mario has to battel different enemies to collect all the six Paint Stars .
Upon rescuing all six Big Paint Stars, they create a rainbow-shaped path to Bowser’s Castle, where Mario and Huey head off to in order to find and rescue Princess Peach. They have to battle Roy Koopa before stopping Bowser.
